TWISTED PAIR CABLE

Twisted Pair Cable has been used extensively throughout the United States in practically every home and office to provide telephone service. Larger installations use 25 Pair cable as a standard to provide for increased capacity.

In the past, bandwidth limitations prevented data from being transmitted significant distances over twisted pair cable. However, recent developments in digital signal processing technology have allowed date to be transmitted in addition to voice without
concern for signal loss.

Current technology allows 16Mbit/sec Token Ring and 100 Mbit/sec FDDI traffic over unshielded twisted pair.

Unshielded twisted pair is fast becoming the preferred media for Ethernet and Token Ring.

25 Pair cable offers the three significant benefits over fiber in an environment free of EMI:

1) Ease of Installation
2) Lighter more flexible
3) Less expensive

The maximum published data rates for the first three categories of cable are:

Category Maximum Data Rate
Category
Maximum Data Rate
CAT 1
Less than 1 Mbps
CAT 2
4 Mbps
CAT 3
16 Mbps
